Drs. Stephen and Marsha Guffey

This scholarship was established in honor and memory of Mr. William Carter (Bill) Payne, emeritus associate professor of Clinical Lab Sciences, who served as a faculty member for 31 years before retiring in 2019. Mr. Payne passed away on July 21, 2020. The scholarship is awarded annually to a student in the Clinical Lab Sciences degree program who best exemplifies the commitment to academic and clinical excellence that marked Mr. Payne’s personal and professional career. During his tenure, Mr. Payne taught classes in microbiology, immunology, parasitology, and blood banking. He participated in collaborative research, published widely in wound healing, and co-authored a widely used textbook on clinical microbiology. He also served on various university, college, and departmental committees, including the Faculty Senate, and was honored with a faculty teaching award. This scholarship fund was donated by lifelong friends Dr. Stephen and Marsha Guffey in his honor and memory.
