Eunitha Steele Hout Commitment to Education Scholarship
Children, grandchildren and other friends and relatives established the scholarship you are receiving in recognition of the outstanding career of Eunitha Steele Hout of Monette, AR, who was a dedicated leader and pioneering educator in Craighead County. Mrs. Hout began her career in teaching during the 1930s, before a college degree was required. She furthered her own education while continuing to teach, and later served as principal at Monette Elementary School. She eventually earned two bachelor’s degrees, two master’s degrees and completed the course work for a specialist degree at ASU, all while rearing a family, teaching, and working on the family farm. Even more impressive, Mrs. Hout, because of her responsibilities as a wife, mother and operator of a family farm, never attended class during a regular semester; she completed all of her course work at night, on Saturdays and during summer terms. In more than 40 years as a classroom teacher, Mrs. Hout nurtured and challenged three generations of students each day to live up to their God-given ability. As one of only a handful of female administrators in the late 1960s and early 1970s, she set the standard for others who would follow by implementing important programs such as Head Start and the school breakfast program. Because she has provided such an outstanding example of good will toward others, friends and family established this award in hopes that you will work and fulfill the potential you have shown to meet the high professional standards Mrs. Hout set during her 40-year career.
