The scholarship you are receiving was established by the Mid-South Chapter of the American Society of Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers (ASFMRA) to honor Cary Matthews, ARA, RPRA, a dedicated alumnus of Arkansas State University’s College of Business and a lifelong advocate for agriculture, rural property appraisal, real estate, and the Jonesboro community. A graduate of Jonesboro High School’s Class of 1982, Cary later attended Arkansas State University and built a distinguished career in appraisal and agricultural finance. He became the first person in Arkansas to earn both the Accredited Rural Appraiser (ARA) and Real Property Review Appraiser (RPRA) designations through ASFMRA, demonstrating his exceptional professional expertise and commitment to the field. Cary also served three terms on the Arkansas Appraiser Licensing and Certification Board, including two years as Chairman, after being appointed by the Governor of Arkansas. Throughout his career, he owned his own appraisal business, later joining Farm Credit MidSouth as a Staff Appraiser and eventually advancing to Chief Appraisal Officer. Known for his passion for mentoring, his support of Arkansas State University and Red Wolves athletics, and his devotion to faith and family, Cary left a lasting impact on both his profession and community before his passing in December 2022.
